From Al's to Zutz: Celebrating a Century of Delaware's Jewish Business
Tradition, focuses on 200 Jewish retail businesses that were influential throughout
the past century because of their economic impact, effect on the Jewish community, and
status as icons in the collective memory of Delawareans.
The venerable Wilmington Dry Goods, Newark Department Store, The Black Cat,
Charcoal Pit, Rosenbaum's Toy Store, and Mort's Delicatessen are some of he businesses in
the exhibit. Visitors will see historic photographs of facades, interiors,
proprietors and workers, memorabilia, advertisements and nostalgic merchandise.
While From Al's to Zutz focuses on Delaware's Jewish community, the
story transcends the experience of one immigrant group to reach a more universal
experience of newcomers to America.
Barred by law and custom from many areas of work, many Jews found early
employment as peddlers, and later if successful, buying a wagon from which to sell.
Eventually, the merchant might open a small store and then a larger store.
Eventually Jews moved into all areas of the business world and became full partners in
Delaware's economy.
Jewish business in Delaware is unusual because everyone patronized Jewish
businesses. In larger cities and states, only Jews would patronize Jewish businesses
because they were restricted to operate in the ghettos.
