In recognition of the DuPont Company's 200th
anniversary, the Historical Society of Delaware is presenting an exhibition
entitled Inside and Out: Two Centuries of DuPont Products in the Home.

Throughout its history, the DuPont Company
has been an industrial giant, with a reputation for innovation and high-quality
products. But for over half of its history, it made few products for
household use. Then in the early twentieth century, beginning with
cellophane, rayon, and most particularly, nylon, the company began a great
synthetic materials revolution that brought wave after wave of new products into
the home and workplace - in nylon stockings, clothing, carpeting, paint,
kitchenware, toothbrush bristles, and a myriad of other areas. In the
process DuPont transformed itself into a household word.
The core of the exhibition Inside and Out
is a scale recreation of a house that has been constructed in the History Museum
Gallery. Three rooms and a storage area have been completely furnished with
products made from DuPont inventions. Products range from easy-to-spot
TeflonR linings of pots
and pans in the kitchen to StainmasterR carpeting
on the floors to lesser known products such as RyniteR
a plastic found in kitchen appliances. These products were developed over
a long span of time, from LuciteR in
the 1930s to the new SolaeTM, a soy protein in
foods and beverages.

Surrounding the "house" are
displays of other famous DuPont products. One area focuses on DuPont fibers that
have influenced fashion trends of the last 60 years. There are
"test" products made from polymer 6-6 nylon as well as designer and
off-the-rack examples of fabrics such as OrlonR,
QianaR, and LycraR.
And who remembers CorfamR?

A second area features famous DuPont products
used in what has come to be called the "life safety" area. KevlarR
bullet-proof vests, NomexR suits that protect
firefighters from burns, and TyvekR protective
coveralls for those working with environmental hazards. a polyester fiber-filled
dog models a bullet-proof vest and a set of potective booties like those worn by
rescue dogs working at the World Trade Center Disaster site.
