Nova Virginia Tubula,
Peitrus Karius Calivit, ca. 1630
This unusual map
is intriguing to study to our sensibilities. It is turned on it’s side, and
shows the Chesapeake Bay running across map (in the
direction we would consider west to east). It, like
most all maps of the New World at this time, was copied
from the John Smith map. The Smith map was first
published in 1608 and it remained the most influential
map until the last quarter of the 17th
century. Many of the place names Smith used on the map
remain today.
