"A Map of that Part of
America...." 1769
A
small, contemporary map related to one of the most
famous surveys in America. The map portrays Delaware
and adjacent areas of Pennsylvania, Maryland and New
Jersey. Mason and Dixon began the survey of the
Maryland/Pennsylvania border in April, 1765 to resolve a
long-standing dispute between the two colonies. They
also made the first measurement of a degree of latitude
in North America, which is the subject of this map. This
map is a slight variant of one which appeared a year
earlier in The Philosophical Transactions of the
Royal Society of London. Although the map is dated
"Gent Mag. Nov. 1769" above the upper neat line, it is
listed in the contents of the December, 1769 issue.
This example is still in the December, 1769 magazine and
is accompanied by an article titled: "The Length of a
Degree of Latitude in the provinces of Maryland and
Pennsylvania, determined from the Observations of Messrs
Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, appointed by the Royal
Society."
