The Historical Society of Delaware has opened a new exhibition featuring treasures purchased at last fall’s auction of the estate of the late Elbert N. and Ann Hall Valliant Carvel.  All the items were valuable additions to our collections and help us preserve the life and legacy of this remarkable man.

The core of the purchases is eleven scrapbooks and albums, which tell many stories from Carvel’s political career.  In addition to chronicling the issues and politics, the volumes convey a sense of Carvel’s gregarious personality and busy life.  He clearly enjoyed active participation in community organizations and his church.  Politics only built on this, for attending events and meeting people are important parts of the process for both candidates and office holders.

In addition to the scrapbooks, HSD also purchased several items to add to our museum collection.  Chief among them are Governor Carvel’s Nur Temple fez and a silver-plated ceremonial shovel he used at the groundbreaking for the General Foods plant in Dover in 1962.
