Country Roads: The Mayor's Unemployment Relief Committee,
rural road improvements projects, 1930-1932

As part of an effort to get out from under the grip of the Great Depression, the Mayor's Unemployment Relief Committee put unemployed men to work improving New Castle County roads.  On display in the Historical Society of Delaware's Willingtown Square Gallery are more than twenty-seven photographs of well-known New Castle county roadways as they appeared seventy years ago, before suburban sprawl changed the landscape. Stop by to see how many roads you recognize!
