Note: This exhibit is CLOSED. For reference only. A new exhibition at the Historical Society of Delaware spotlights the life of distinguished Wilmington artist Edward L. Loper, Sr. The exhibition entitled Edward L. Loper Sr.: A Life in Art displays highlights of his career as an artist, teacher, and citizen.
Edward Loper was born in 1916 and grew up in Wilmington. His passion even as a child was art. At 20 years of age, Mr. Loper began working for the Index of American Design of the Works Progress Administration. Through this job and his involvement with art & artists, he was able to develop his talent. By 1953 Mr. Loper was working full-time as an artist and art teacher.
His paintings are found in many museum, corporate, and private collections. This exhibit displays photos, awards, exhibition announcements, and early sketchbooks that trace Mr. Loper's career and life. Mr. Loper has recently donated his personal papers to the Historical Society of Delaware's Research Library, and the documents in this exhibition are just a sampling of the material that is available for use by researchers.
