Market Street at Fourth Street
August 22, 1928
Sanborn Collection

This view of Wilmington is often reproduced, but remains a classic view.
The scene appears alive with activity.  The buildings look vibrant with
awnings and signs meant to grab people's attention and shopping dollars.
This photograph was taken just six weeks before trolley cars began to be
taken off the streets.  Perhaps that is why Sanborn chose to stop traffic
for this shot.  The first bus route did not begin to run until September,
1929 and not until ten years later were all the routes taken over by the
buses.
