Delaware National Guard Patrol, 6th and Market Street
1968
Delaware National Guard Collection

Riots following the news that Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated
spurred Mayor John E. Babiarz to call for a National Guard patrol downtown.
Members of the Delaware National Guard stand in front of the Bank of
Delaware Building at 6th and Market Street (Today this building houses
Kuumba Academy.)  The guardsmen kept their presence in the city until
Governor Russell Peterson ordered their removal in January 1969.
