This summer the Historical Society of Delaware presents a special exhibition The Face of Farming: Delaware’s Farm Families which features the photographic work of Wilmington native Kathleen Buckalew and the stories of farmers and farm life in Delaware.

Buckalew spent more than six months traveling Delaware, photographing and interviewing farmers throughout the state.  After driving more than 6,000 miles, shooting 2,783 black and white negatives, 1,952 color slides and transcribing 38 interviews she was left with an amazing look at a disappearing way of life in Delaware – the family farm.

The farmers interviewed for Buckalew’s project expressed their love of the land and why they do what they do.  But as Delaware's farms rapidly turn from fields of corn and pastures to strip malls and housing developments, this exhibition strives to give visitors a look at why farmers hold onto this way of life in their own words.
