In early February, the Historical Society opened its newest exhibition at the Delaware History Museum in Wilmington and the Read House in New Castle. This special exhibition features more than 100 hand-made items from Delaware in the collections of the Historical Society.

Each item in this exhibition was selected by our staff for its quality, the diversity it represents, or the unique Delaware story that it has to tell. Many of these items are on exhibition for the first time, have been recently conserved, or have not been displayed for several years.

Many community favorites are included, as well as newer heirlooms for future generations. Each one is important to us because it helps to tell the complete story of our heritage, history, and culture. As the major economic and population center of the State, Wilmington was also one of the largest producers of craftsmanship. Therefore, objects from the Wilmington area dominate this exhibition and will be specially identified with a logo representing Wilmington’s 175 Anniversary.

At the Read House, the collections are presented in period rooms and the Delaware-made pieces will be identified with First State blue ribbons. Click here for a schedule of special guided tours at the Read House. The Historical Society staff has also been hard at work on our latest publication “Made by Delaware Hands,” an exhibition guide accompanying the exhibition. The book will feature several short essays about the meaning and value of objects in helping us to understand our past as well as over 50 full color photographs of some of the most outstanding objects in the Historical Society’s collection. The guide is now available for purchase - click here for more information.
