What is "The Cook not Mad"?
Find out during one of our hands-on, open hearth,
cooking workshops at the Read House & Gardens!

Enjoy a shared experience with fellow
cooks as you work together to create
a meal in George Read II's old-
fashioned kitchen using historic
techniques.

Taking advantage of modern supermarkets
brimming with fresh produce and meats
year round, you will prepare a meal that
would have been unimaginable in a 19th
century winter -a sumptuous feast featuring
our favorite recipes from the past!

Trained open hearth specialists will
guide you in creating and preparing
a meal using cooking devices such as
a reflecting oven, spider, suspended
kettle, and, of course, plenty of red
hot coals!

Once your meal has been completed,
feast on the fruits of your labors in the
Prohibition-era tap room installed by
Philip and Lydia Laird, third owners of
the Read House.

These workshops are totally hands-on, with trained open-hearth specialists on hand to provide guidance and commentary throughout the program.  If you are interested in signing up for one of these The Cook not Mad" sessions, hurry, space is limited!
