In the selection of Pierre "Pete" du Pont, the Society will be honoring an eminently qualified and much admired Delawarean with its fourth annual Delaware History Makers Award. The award will be presented at a gala reception and dinner on Wednesday evening, April 21, at the Chase Center on the Riverfront. Governor du Pont received his bachelor of science in engineering in 1956 from Princeton University and a doctor of law degree from Harvard University in l963. In the interim, he served as an officer in the United States Navy. Pete began his political career in l968 with election to the House of Representatives of the Delaware General Assembly. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, and was picked by Time magazine as one of America’s "200 Faces for the Future" in 1975. |

In l976, Pete du Pont was elected governor of Delaware and reelected in l980. As governor, Pete focused on strengthening the state’s finances, improving education and preventing youth unemployment. But he is probably best remembered for passing the Financial Center Development Act in 1981, which attracted over thirty banks to the Delaware and created some 43,000 new jobs in the First State. Governor du Pont has served on several corporate and nonprofit boards and is currently chairman of the board of the National Center for Policy Analysis. Pete is married to the former Elise R. Wood. They have a daughter, three sons, six granddaughters, and four grandsons. The Delaware History Makers Award recognizes living individuals who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to the quality of life in Delaware, our nation or the world. The event supports the Society’s history education programs. We hope you will be able to join us for this special evening. |
